This fair trade product is an innovative blend of fine thread work and the melodious sound of the bell. The bells are made from iron sheets coated in a copper alloy. The interior has a wooden part that rings the bell. It hangs from a strap that has been finely embroidered.
Originally used by shepherds to locate the grazing cattle, these bells can now be used for home décor, door bells, etc. They are handcrafted by artisans in the Kutch region of India. Both women & men participate in the process of making the bell, which consists of different steps. The fair trade artisans receive a fair wage for their work, and are given development opportunities to help raise their communities above poverty.
Abdul and his wife Fatima belong to an artisan cooperative in the northwestern region of India. Because of severe drought, this region is not farmable. Artisans must use crafts, such as bell-making, to earn an income and support the local economy of the region.
